India protest halts work on world’s cheapest car

TATA Motors has stopped production of the world’s cheapest car, telling its 5,500 West Bengal factory workers to stay at home as thousands of farmers protested to get compensation for their land. The move cast more doubt over the [pounds]1,250 Nano, due to go on sale this year. Tata has faced growing opposition since acquiring 997 fertile acres for the plant in 2006, with the road outside now blockaded.
It has threatened to move elsewhere..
